Leica Live Moment on Xiaomi 17T Series

Xiaomi and Leica Are Five Years In, and the 17T Series Might Be Their Most Interesting Move Yet

Most smartphone camera partnerships follow a familiar script: brand A puts brand B’s name on a lens, everyone wins in the marketing department, and the photos look more or less the same. The Xiaomi and Leica partnership has been doing something a little different, and the upcoming 17T Series is the clearest sign yet of where that collaboration is actually headed.

The two brands first joined forces in 2022 around a shared idea: bring the Leica look to smartphones in a way that felt genuine rather than cosmetic. Early results included two distinct photographic styles, the Leica Authentic Look for purists and the Leica Vibrant Look for social media, alongside classic Leica shutter sounds and watermarks. Leica’s optics evolved alongside it, moving from Summicron to the wider-aperture Summilux lenses across successive Xiaomi flagships.

By 2025, the collaboration shifted from co-engineering to what both companies are calling strategic co-creation. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra arrived with the world’s first Leica APO lens on a smartphone. Then came the Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi, a device built to mark Leica’s 100th anniversary that physically recreated the feel of shooting with a classic Leica camera, complete with a Red Dot badge, a Camera Ring dial, and a dedicated Leica Essential mode that could simulate the image output of iconic cameras like the Leica M9 and M3.

That is the context for understanding what the Xiaomi 17T Series is trying to do.

The headline feature is something called Leica Live Moment, which is built around a simple but genuinely interesting premise. A single photo freezes one instant. A video captures everything. But most meaningful moments live somewhere in between, a shift in expression, a fleeting glance, the half-second before something actually happens. Leica Live Moment is designed to capture that in-between space by treating motion as part of the image rather than an afterthought.

In Portrait mode, this becomes Leica Live Portrait, which layers natural bokeh over dynamic shots so that movement and expression come through with depth rather than looking like a GIF with good lighting. The Leica aesthetic is applied across the entire rear camera system on the 17T Series, so the look stays consistent regardless of which lens you are shooting with.

The other significant addition is the Leica 5x telephoto camera, which is available across all models in the 17T lineup for the first time. That matters because it gives Leica Live Moment the reach and clarity to actually capture the expressions and motion it is designed for, whether you are two feet away or across the room.

Rounding out the package are an upgraded eye-care display built for longer viewing sessions and a larger battery across the entire lineup.

The global launch of the Xiaomi 17T Series is happening today, May 28. You can tune in at mi.com/ph/event/2026/xiaomi-launch-may-2026.
