How Blogging Changed Me and My Career

How Blogging Changed Me and My Career

It was over 10 years ago when it all started. Like most of the bloggers I know, it all started as a hobby. A way to share out thoughts, our opinions, and sometimes even how even felt that day. It was our journal. I got into it because I’m an avid reader of blogs. I love reading their stories, experiences, and the friendships built in the blogging community.

My first blog was about a restaurant I visited in Marikina, I shared my experience. How to get there, what the place looks and feels like, the food, the price, and I added a couple of photos I took using a digicam. There weren’t super high-end smartphones then or mirrorless cameras. I lost the blog post after moving to a different hosting.

Blogging has opened a lot of doors for me and that door and I am very thankful for that. When my blog started getting traction, I started receiving emails from different agencies – Marketing, Public Relations, Advertising, and also sometimes being contacted by the brand directly. I got invited to attend events about product launches, press events, I also got to visit different places to review hotels, restaurants, meet celebrities, and many more.

Being exposed to the marketing industry gave me an interest in pursuing a career in marketing. I started doing my research about marketing careers, I took online classes, certification classes, and even attended a short course at the University of the Philippines (Diliman) for Strategic Marketing. Right after that, I worked from home as a Virtual Assistant for a business coach in the US. As a virtual assistant, I was the Executive Assistant and a Project Manager for her like of business. Then I became a Content Specialist for an outsourcing company in the Philippines wherein I manage a bar in Hong Kong and a restaurant in Dubai. Eventually, I became a Digital Marketing Manager for a tech retail company that brings electronics and gadgets from China and sells them on different online stores and physical stores. After that, I went back to freelancing and got a client from Australia.

All of these happened because I blogged.

As years go by, the digital world has changed a lot. Bloggers are no longer the only ones making noise online, there came a huge rise in influencers, and bloggers evolved to vloggers, and a new bread of performers emerged Tiktokers. Although I am not getting any younger, I try to remain relevant and adapt to the changes in the industry. Because of new platforms, there is now an even playing field. Even motivational speakers, pastors, preachers went big on TikTok to reach out to the younger demographic and spread the word.

What’s next for me? I will still be blogging until God knows when. I might take another class and specialize in media buying or Facebook Ads because what I know is just the tip of the iceberg. Then eventually set up my own e-commerce business.
