The Racket Professional Organization, widely known as RPO, recently wrapped up its highly anticipated APAC Level 1 Coach Training Tour in the Philippines. It was a massive success, certifying more than 110 local coaches across three major cities. This tour stands as one of the largest international pickleball coaching initiatives the country has ever seen, setting a high standard for how the sport is taught and played locally.
This milestone is a huge step forward. For a long time, sports booms in the country relied heavily on self-taught players sharing tips on the fly. By bringing structured, world-class education straight to Filipino communities, RPO is ensuring that the growth of the sport is built on a solid, professional foundation.
Connor Nguyen, the Managing Director of RPO APAC, believes that getting certified is only the beginning of a much larger journey. He explains that a certificate should never be the finish line. Instead, the vision is to build a living community where coaches can keep learning from one another, stay connected, and access real career opportunities long after the weekend workshops are over. This is how the sport builds deep roots in the country.
The training itself was intense and deeply rewarding. It combined ten hours of online learning with a rigorous practical workshop on the court. Aspiring coaches, experienced instructors, and passionate players learned everything from proper swing mechanics and player assessment to lesson planning and communication skills. In Manila, participants even got to learn directly from Collin Johns, a legendary world-class professional and the Global Technical Director for RPO.
What makes this initiative special is that RPO is not just handing out certificates and leaving. They are building a genuine pathway for career growth. Take the story of Carlo, a local coach who started out just like any other participant in the Level 1 program. Through dedication, he advanced to RPO’s intensive leadership training, and recently returned to the Manila workshop as an Assistant Clinician to help train the next batch of coaches. His journey is proof of what is possible when local talent is given the right support and mentorship.
To keep this momentum going, RPO is connecting these certified coaches with major industry partners. For example, top standout coaches from the Manila workshop will have the opportunity to join the selection process for Helios, one of the country’s leading pickleball venue operators, opening doors for actual coaching jobs. Certified coaches will also get to assist in clinics during the prestigious PPA Tour Asia events, working alongside elite international clinicians and gaining priceless on-court experience.
Through these partnerships, along with support from global pickleball giants like JOOLA, local coaches are being plugged directly into the international pickleball scene. They are no longer just teaching in isolation; they are part of a global movement.
