Vivo Y55 – An Eye Candy That Can Give a Punch!

I’ve had a good two-week run with Vivo’s latest smart phone, Vivo Y55. Launched a month ago Vivo Y55 is worthy contender in the entry-level arena.

Vivo Y55 packs itself with selfie-centric features including the Smart Screen Flash which flashes the screen with plain white color while brightness is at the highest. This feature provides illumination so you can make better selfies at lowlight. Here are the rest of the specs:

  • Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor / Adreno 505 GPU
  • 2GB of RAM / 16GB of expandable storage
  • 5.2-inch HD IPS display, 2.5D curved glass, 1280 x 720 resolution
  • 8-megapixel rear camera with flash / 5-megapixel front camera
  • Dual SIM / 3G, LTE
  • WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, A-GPS
  • 2650mAh battery

The plastic body is compensated with a color popularized by the iPhone – rose gold. Speaking of iPhones, Vivo’s FunTouch UI is inspired by the iOS. The pull up panel is similar to the iOS and also the look of its notification panel looks familiar. Uninstalling an app also works the same way as iOS, the shaking app icons appears after the long press on the app you want to uninstall is done.

FunTouch UI worked together well with Android’s Marshmallow allowing you to send a text or write a note while watching a video browsing Facebook without having to switch between apps.

Vivo Y55’s 8MP camera delivers decent images, I’d say better contrast and color rendition than other 8MP camera phones that I’ve handled.  Selfie photos are OK too but does not do well in low light setting.

The selfie camera’s 5MP sensor doesn’t offer much, but beautify does the job well or am I just that good looking. It’s 2,650mAh can last up to 10 hours on average use, probably less when you go on data.

Vivo Y55 has the look and feel of a premium smart phone with specs of an entry level phone. The price tag of P7,990 will be quite a challenge for those who has limited budget this Christmas and with the rise of local brands. Although the specs aren’t that far away from  the competition, Vivo Y55 is leads in terms of build and quality plus the fun and functional features of the FunTouch UI.
