Mondelēz International, a leading snacks company in the Philippines, has ramped up its commitment to sustainability by becoming a member of the Net Zero Carbon Alliance (NZCA). This move aligns with the company’s global objective of achieving net zero carbon emissions across its entire value chain by 2050.
Aligning with Consumer Values: Sustainable Snacking for a Greener Future
“We prioritize ensuring responsible snacking throughout our entire value chain, from working closely with communities to providing consumers with the snacks they love,” shared Aleli Arcilla, Managing Director of Mondelēz International in the Philippines.
Consumers today increasingly seek convenient and delicious snacks that are kind to the environment. Recognizing this trend, Mondelez strives to deliver high-quality snacks with minimal environmental impact through reduced energy and water usage, along with sustainable waste management practices.

Significant Progress in Sustainability Initiatives
Since 2018, the company has been actively implementing sustainability measures in the Philippines. This includes installing a biomass boiler at their Parañaque City facility, utilizing eco-friendly rice hull fuel instead of traditional fossil fuels. Additionally, they have transitioned to 100% renewable energy, including hydropower, for their manufacturing operations since 2023. These efforts have resulted in a remarkable 96% reduction in carbon emissions from their Philippine plant since 2018.
Global Efforts and Collaboration for a Sustainable Future
Mondelēz International’s commitment extends beyond the Philippines. The company is a proud member of the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)’s Net Zero Carbon Ambition program. They have submitted a time-bound plan aligned with the 1.5°C warming target and are committed to achieving zero deforestation across their primary commodities by 2025.
Furthermore, a 2022 State of Snacking Survey revealed that a significant portion (61%) of global consumers are willing to pay a slight premium for sustainable snacks. This highlights the growing demand for environmentally responsible practices within the snacking industry.
Joining Forces with the Net Zero Carbon Alliance
The Net Zero Carbon Alliance (NZCA) is a private sector initiative in the Philippines aimed at achieving net zero carbon emissions among businesses. As a member, Mondelez Philippines gains access to the collective expertise of the alliance and can collaborate to create a roadmap towards carbon neutrality.
The alliance offers numerous benefits including shared best practices, large-scale carbon emission reduction and tracking initiatives, and access to green financing. Launched by the Energy Development Corporation (EDC), the NZCA welcomes Mondelez International and aims to achieve collective carbon neutrality by 2050.
