I’ve had the HUAWEI MateBook 13 with me for over a week now and I’m enjoying every “bit” of it. I was just too excited I didn’t create a proper unboxing video. I have one, but it isn’t pleasing.
HUAWEI launched its first MateBook in 2016 and there have a been a lot of new features that was added and improved. My favorite is the Huawei Share since most of my mobile gadgets are in the HUAWEI Ecosystem.
The Matebook 3 comes in a premium white box that’s worth keeping. Inside the box is just the unit, a charger, cable and a USB Type C adapter.
The HUAWEI MateBook 13 comes with a 65 W Type-C portable adapter which can be used with a range of charging outputs. It can be used well as a power adapter to charge your smartphone, it supports HUAWEI SuperCharge for certain phones but can only charge at 40 W because of the phone’s limit.
There are only three slots in the Matebook 13 – two Type C ports – one for charging (left) and the one is for data . It can be interchangeable but charging will be slower if the data port is used for charging. The the 3rd slot is for the headphone/mic port and beside is the led charging indicator.
It weighs just 1.3kg3 and with a thickness of 14.9mm. Matebook 13 comes with a slim-bezel full display in 2K resolution. Screen-to-body ratio is at 88% with 4.4m thin bezels. For a better productivity experience, it has multi-touch so it’s feels as if you are working on a tablet.
The MateBook 13 has one of the most comfortable and quiet keyboards I have ever used on a laptop. Despite the laptop’s small size the keyboard doesn’t feel compressed. It’s still fun to type with.
Located at the upper right is the power button / finger print scanner which works smoothly. Once you register your finger it automatically goes to desktop once you turn it on without having to enter a pin or password. The bottom right is where the NFC is located for Huawei Share, enabling file transfer between the laptop and smartphone, but also in making seamless collaboration between the laptop and smartphone.
In terms of performance, the HUAWEI MateBook 13 is powered by 10th Generation Intel® i7 Core™ processor with up to 16 GB dual channel RAM. It also has a high-speed PCIe SSD. Additionally, the HUAWEI MateBook 13 packs up to NVIDIA® GeForce® MX 250 with 2GB of GDDR5. This combination is enough for a bit of gaming and heavy processing such as photo and video editing.
This section will be tested later on my in-depth review.
All that power requires a better cooling solution which why HUAWEI added a Shark Fin Fan 2.0 in the Matebook 13. Inspired by the shape of its namesake, the cooling solution directs airflow with its twin highspeed fans setup to maximise cooling performance. The fans work in concert with software to balance noise and performance. Speaking of concert, the speakers are found at the bottom. It’s equipped with Dolby Atmos® immersive audio, creating an amazing headphone experience with breath-taking, moving audio that flows above and around you.
A HUAWEI MateBook 13 can play local Full HD videos for 11.6 hours, support productivity workloads for 9 hours, or power 8 hours of continuous Internet browsing.
HUAWEI may be new in the laptop segment but it certainly putting up a good fight. With its innovation and its very own ecosystem, it gives the leading brands something to watch out for. I’ll come up with an review next so watch out for it, a vlog maybe.
